Opening Into Spring

I have the great pleasure of living and working on Hornby. Hardly a day passes that I’m not grateful to call Hornby home. I love living nestled in this natural world, the pace of the seasons, the intimacy of our small community.
One of my jobs is teaching yoga. In the off-season, we gather in our beautiful community hall, with the woodstove burning and those lovely wood floors beneath us. Twice a week we wander in and out of asana, sometimes sinking deeply into joints and tissues, finding space and openness within. And sometimes flowing through vinyasas, one pose leading into the next, developing strength, balance, a sense of groundedness. In the summer, I take my practice outdoors, to the beautiful Sandpiper meadow, overlooking the beach, across the ocean to Lasqueti Island. Four mornings a week, we gather on the grass and practice amongst nature. Doing yoga outdoors allows me to take in the world around me, feel the unevenness of the ground beneath me, breath in the clean clear air pouring in off the sea. It feeds my body, my mind in a different way and my practice is richer for it.
Once a year, my friend, Nancy Frohlick (of Che Baba Yoga, Vancouver, www.chebaba.ca) and I lead a weekend long yoga retreat, welcoming spring. From Friday evening until mid-day Sunday, we sink into practice with a small group of students. Some folks come from off-island and stay at a lovely guesthouse waterfront on Little Tribune Bay. Some bunk in with local friends and some come from the comfort of their own Hornby homes. We are all treated to gourmet vegetarian food prepared with care by local caterers Jordan and William (email@example.com) and 8+ hours of yoga practice. Enrollment is limited so there is plenty of opportunity for individual guidance and support. People come who are new to yoga and other participants have been practicing for years. There is time around the sessions to take in the island, a walk around Helliwell, a wander down the beach, a visit to artists’ studios, the Ringside Market, the Co-op. Time for rest and rejuvenation. Time to sink in before the summer and all it’s spinning wonder comes blasting through. There are still a few spaces left in the 2012 Spring retreat, May 4 – 6th. Interested? Please contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
I am grateful to those who have shared their yoga practice with me over the years, to those of you I see each week and those I see once a year, I thank you for your trust, your willingness and your effort. I thank you for the gift teaching has given me, for all I have learned, and continue to learn, on this journey.
