Counselling / Douglas Hanson, MA, RCC, CCRC
Douglas moved to Hornby Island in 2005, having visited yearly since 1995. He was attracted by the proliferation of wild life, birds, sea life, the sense of community and experiencing the island as a place of healing and rejuvenation. Douglas has temporarily relocated to Thunder Bay. Since leaving Hornby Island he has continued to provide psychotherapy to the Hornby Island residents he was already seeing. This has been accomplished through the use of telephone and skype counselling. The reports received from these residents are that these counselling sessions have been beneficial. Skype and telephone counselling are now common place especially for people who live in remote areas. Now that Douglas has experienced the effectiveness of these modes of counselling he is offering these services to all the residents of Hornby Island. In this way you will not have to bear the cost of the ferries and the time required to commute off island. Therapy is offered on a sliding scale dependent upon household income.
Hornby Island Counselling was established in 2008. Douglas’s professional background incorporates 34 years combined experience in clinical counselling and vocational rehabilitation counseling. Over the years Douglas has counselled individuals and couples facing issues including; couples distress, trauma, depression, anxiety, grief and loss, stress, anger, and addictions.
Counselling requires an understanding of and compassion for those coping with life’s challenges and transitions. Douglas’s approach to therapy is supportive, non- judgmental, client-centered, collaborative and humanistic. He incorporates the principles of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and emotionally focused therapy (EFT). CBT looks at the interaction between thoughts, emotions and behaviors in the person under duress. EFT is a short-term approach to couple’s counseling that recognizes the need for emotional security in relationships and seeks to re-create a sense of connection between partners.
We offer a sliding scale for services based on the household income.
