Vacation Home Rentals are now, for the first time, a permitted land use on Hornby Island as a result of recent amendments to the Hornby Island Official Community Plan and the Hornby Island Land Use Bylaw following extensive community consultation and careful consideration of the various interests and concerns.
Short term rentals may be conducted according to the policies in the Official Community Plan: and in compliance with the regulations in the Land Use Bylaw.
The Local Trust Committee has created a Guide to Conducting Vacation Home Rentals on Hornby Island. This is posted on the Islands Trust website on the Hornby Island Local Trust Committee’s home page under “Latest News”.
The purpose of this guide is to provide an outline of the regulations governing vacation home rentals and the planning policies on which they are based. The guide states that property owners considering conducting vacation home rentals should read the relevant sections of the Official Community Plan and Land Use Bylaw.
Under the Bylaw Enforcement Policy adopted by the Islands Trust Council a Bylaw Enforcement Officer may commence an investigation without written complaint where…advertisements for uses believed to be illegal are observed.
Anyone with questions or in need of clarity about policies and regulations should contact Islands Trust planning staff at the Northern Office on Gabriola Island at 250-247-2063 (a caller can be connected toll-free through Enquiry BC: 1-800-663-7867).
A notice to draw the attention of residents and property owners to the availability of the guide will be placed in an upcoming issue of the Island Grapevine. Mention of it will also be made in the Trustees Report in the next issue of The First Edition.
