A quiet stroll at Grassy Point with a friend (who also happens to be a local author) one spring morning a few years ago, and her casual comment that the Ringside bookstore was “for sale” and voila! A few new sets of shelves, a computer to figure out special orders, wonderful staff, and fifty cases of books later, 32 Books on Hornby opened with much fanfare, food and warm support from the community.

My years of working as a writing teacher and editor seemed to be the perfect jumping off point for running a bookstore, and it’s been a true adventure! But it all comes down to this: there really is nothing quite like curling up with a new book, whether it’s on the couch under a warm blanket in the middle of the winter doldrums, or under the shade of that big maple away from the mid-summer crowds. It has been so much fun to listen to visitors exclaim that they are amazed to see a ‘real’ bookstore on this Island. It’s always a delight to be able to bring in that hard-to-find book for locals or to match up the perfect literary gem with each and every person. But mostly, it’s just a wonderful thing to have a space where people of all ages come together to talk books.

And speaking of books, please check out all that we have to offer, and especially the tomes from our local writers including: Janey Bennett, Dan Bruiger, Olivia Fletcher, Bernice Friesen, Amanda Hale, Keith Harrison, William E. (Bill) Smith, and Rita Taylor.

Happy reading! Come visit us in the Ringside soon.
